Why Kazakhstan Is a Hidden Gem for International Students
Here’s a statistic that might surprise you.
Kazakhstan is home to over 120 nationalities and has been investing aggressively in internationalization since the early 2000s. The country’s government made a deliberate policy decision: attract global talent, fund it generously, and build a world-class academic reputation.
They’re not joking around.
The result is a scholarship ecosystem that remains dramatically undersubscribed by African applicants, despite being fully open and actively welcoming to students from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Ethiopia, Cameroon, Senegal, and across the continent.
Most international students don’t consider Kazakhstan because it doesn’t feature in mainstream scholarship conversations. Scholarship blogs focus on the usual suspects—Chevening, Fulbright, DAAD—and Kazakhstan gets overlooked. But that oversight is working in your favor right now.
The academic infrastructure here is also more serious than most people realize. Kazakhstan’s flagship institution, Nazarbayev University, has partnerships with MIT, Duke University, University of Pennsylvania, and University of Wisconsin-Madison, among others. Its medical and engineering programs are fully accredited internationally.
You’re not compromising on quality by choosing Kazakhstan. You’re choosing strategy.
The country also sits at the crossroads of Europe and Asia—geographically, culturally, and economically. For African students interested in careers in energy, mining, agriculture, technology, or international relations, the professional network exposure alone is worth the flight.
And yes, the flight is usually covered too.
Understanding “Fully Funded” in the Kazakhstan Context
Before you get excited about any scholarship, you need to know exactly what you’re getting. The phrase “fully funded” gets thrown around loosely, and it can mean very different things.
In Kazakhstan’s scholarship programs, “fully funded” typically includes tuition, monthly stipends, university accommodation, and—in most government programs—international travel costs. That’s the gold standard, and several Kazakhstan programs meet it.
Here’s a clear breakdown of what different funding types look like:
| Funding Type | What It Covers |
|---|---|
| Fully Funded | Tuition + living stipend + accommodation + travel |
| Partial Scholarship | Tuition only, or tuition + partial stipend |
| Grant | One-time payment toward a specific cost |
| Loan | Money you repay after graduation |
| Work-Study | You work on campus to offset costs |
You want to be in that first row. Kazakhstan offers programs that land squarely there.
What “fully funded” doesn’t always include is worth knowing upfront:
- Visa application fees (typically $50–$150, you pay this yourself)
- Health insurance (some programs provide it; others require you to purchase it)
- Personal expenses—clothing, phone bills, weekend travel, personal care
- Books and study materials beyond what your faculty provides
The Bolashak International Scholarship—Kazakhstan’s most prestigious fully funded program—covers all major costs including tuition at partner universities, a monthly living allowance, return airfare, and health insurance. It’s the benchmark.
The Kazakhstani Government Scholarship for International Students (administered through the Ministry of Education and Science) covers tuition and dormitory accommodation at public universities, plus a modest monthly stipend of approximately 45,000–70,000 KZT (roughly $90–$150 USD per month depending on the city).
When you’re reading any scholarship description, train yourself to scan for these five phrases: “tuition waiver,” “monthly stipend,” “accommodation provided,” “return airfare,” and “health coverage.” If you see all five, you have a genuinely full scholarship. If two or three are missing, ask before you apply. Making an informed choice now saves heartbreak later.
Major Kazakhstan Scholarships Available in 2026
Let’s get specific. These are the programs you should be researching right now.
1. The Bolashak International Scholarship
This is Kazakhstan’s flagship program and one of the most generous government-funded scholarships in Central Asia.
Bolashak (which means “future” in Kazakh) was established in 1993 and has sent over 13,000 Kazakhstani citizens abroad. But here’s the part that most blogs skip: Bolashak also has frameworks through which international students studying IN Kazakhstan’s partner institutions can access affiliated funding channels.
More directly, the spirit and infrastructure of Bolashak shapes an entire ecosystem of university-level funding at institutions like Nazarbayev University, Kazakh National University (KazNU), and KIMEP University.
For international students, Bolashak-adjacent programs at Nazarbayev University offer:
- Full tuition waiver (valued at $8,000–$15,000 per year)
- Monthly stipend of $400–$600 USD
- On-campus accommodation
- Annual return flights
2. Kazakhstan Government Scholarship for International Students
This is the program most directly available to you as an international applicant from Africa or elsewhere.
The Ministry of Education and Science of Kazakhstan allocates a quota of scholarships specifically for citizens of developing and partner nations each year. The 2026 cycle is open to undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral applicants.
Key facts:
- Coverage: Full tuition at public universities + dormitory + monthly stipend
- Duration: Length of your program (3–6 years)
- Universities: Kazakh National University, Satbayev University, Kazakh National Technical University, and others
- Popular fields: Engineering, medicine, natural sciences, law, economics
- Language: Programs available in Kazakh, Russian, and increasingly in English
3. Nazarbayev University Scholarships (NU Scholarships)
Nazarbayev University deserves its own category because it operates differently from other Kazakhstani universities.
NU is modeled on Western research universities, operates entirely in English, and offers substantial merit-based scholarships to international students. The acceptance rate is competitive but manageable for strong candidates.
NU offers:
- Graduate School Fellowships covering 100% tuition + $600/month stipend
- Undergraduate Merit Scholarships covering up to 100% tuition
- Research Assistantships for doctoral students (with additional stipends)
NU’s programs in engineering, education, science, and social policy are internationally accredited. Its School of Medicine partners with the University of Pittsburgh, which means your degree carries serious international weight.
4. KIMEP University Scholarships
KIMEP University in Almaty is another English-language institution with an international focus.
KIMEP offers merit scholarships covering 25%–100% of tuition costs for international students, with some fully funded packages available for exceptional Master’s program applicants. Its programs in business, law, and journalism are particularly strong.
5. University-Specific Scholarships at Public Institutions
Beyond the headline programs, individual Kazakhstani universities maintain their own international scholarship budgets. Satbayev University (engineering and technology), Kazakh National Medical University, and the International University of Information Technologies (IUIT) all offer competitive partial-to-full funding for international students.
The key is to contact admissions offices directly, not just look at the website. Many scholarship seats at these institutions go unfilled because nobody asked.
Building Your Kazakhstan Scholarship Database: A Systematic Approach
Finding legitimate, verified scholarship opportunities requires a system—not just a Google search.
Here’s how to build yours:
Step 1: Start with official government sources.
The Ministry of Education and Science of Kazakhstan maintains an official portal for international scholarship applications. Bookmark it now. Any program listed there is verified and real.
Step 2: Go directly to university websites.
Don’t rely on third-party aggregators for the final details. Visit Nazarbayev University’s official financial aid page, KIMEP’s scholarship page, and Satbayev’s international office page directly. Scholarship details change annually, and you need the 2026-specific information.
Step 3: Use scholarship aggregator platforms—but verify everything.
These platforms are good for discovery:
- Scholars4Dev — one of the most reliable databases for international development scholarships, with regular Kazakhstan updates
- Afterschool Africa — specifically curates opportunities for African students and regularly features Central Asian programs
- DAAD Scholarship Database — includes partner programs with Kazakhstani institutions
- Opportunity Desk — regularly posts Kazakhstan government scholarship openings
- Your country’s education ministry — Nigeria’s Federal Scholarship Board, Ghana Education Trust Fund (GetFund), Kenya’s Higher Education Loans Board, and others maintain bilateral scholarship agreements with Kazakhstan
Step 4: Filter specifically for international applicants.
When browsing, search terms like “international student quota,” “foreign national scholarship,” “developing country applicant,” and “bilateral scholarship agreement” will surface programs explicitly open to you.
Step 5: Set up Google Alerts.
Create alerts for “Kazakhstan scholarship 2026 international students,” “Nazarbayev University scholarship application,” and “Kazakhstan government scholarship open.” You’ll get notified the moment new cycles open.
Step 6: Join scholarship communities.
Facebook groups like “African Students in Kazakhstan” and Reddit communities like r/scholarships have real students sharing current cycle information, insider tips, and honest reviews of programs. These communities are worth their weight in gold.
Step 7: Verify before you invest time.
A legitimate Kazakhstan scholarship will have: an official .edu.kz or .gov.kz domain, a named contact person or office, clear application requirements, and no request for payment at any stage. If anyone asks you to pay an “application processing fee,” walk away.
Your curated database—built systematically from official sources—becomes the foundation that makes everything else easier.
Kazakhstan Scholarship Eligibility Checklist
Before you invest weeks in an application, spend thirty minutes checking whether you qualify. Here’s what most Kazakhstan scholarships require:
Standard Eligibility Requirements:
- ✅ Nationality/Citizenship: Citizen of an eligible country (most Kazakhstan government scholarships target citizens of developing nations, CIS countries, and bilateral agreement partners—check if your country has an agreement with Kazakhstan)
- ✅ Age: Most programs prefer applicants under 35 for undergraduate/master’s; doctoral programs often extend to 40+. There’s no blanket upper age limit at most institutions
- ✅ Academic record: Minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0 or equivalent (65%–70% in most African grading systems). Nazarbayev University is more competitive
- ✅ Language proficiency: English-medium programs require IELTS 6.0–6.5 or TOEFL iBT 79–85. Russian-medium programs may not require English tests. Some programs offer language waivers for prior English-medium graduates
- ✅ Previous education: A completed bachelor’s degree for master’s applicants; a master’s degree for doctoral applicants. Final-year undergraduates may apply conditionally
- ✅ Field of study: Most open fields include STEM, medicine, economics, law, education, and social sciences. Check program-specific restrictions
- ✅ Financial need: Some programs factor in demonstrated financial need; others are purely merit-based
- ✅ Health requirements: A medical fitness certificate is typically required before enrollment
Adult Applicant Flags (The Honest Truth):
Work experience doesn’t disqualify you—it often strengthens your application. Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Education values practical professional background, particularly for graduate and doctoral applications. If you’ve been working for 5–10 years, frame that clearly in your personal statement.
Employment gaps are not automatically red flags. Kazakhstan scholarship committees review applications holistically. A gap followed by a clear explanation of what you were doing—raising children, managing a family business, developing vocational skills—reads as maturity and clarity of purpose, not stagnation.
Are You Eligible? Quick Self-Assessment:
Answer yes or no to these four questions:
- Do you hold a completed degree (or are you in your final year)?
- Is your academic average above 60%–65%?
- Is your native language English, or can you demonstrate English/Russian proficiency?
- Are you a citizen of a country that maintains diplomatic relations with Kazakhstan?
If you answered yes to all four, you are likely eligible for at least one Kazakhstan scholarship program. Move to Section 8 immediately.
If you answered no to one or two, read the next section—you may still qualify through alternative criteria or specific programs with flexible requirements.
The 5 Scholarship Types Available in Kazakhstan (And Which One Is Right for You)
1. Government-to-Government Bilateral Scholarships
Who funds it: The Kazakhstan government through bilateral agreements with partner nations.
What makes you competitive: Being from a priority partner country (many African nations qualify), having a strong academic record, and demonstrating intent to apply skills relevant to development.
Typical award: Full tuition + dormitory + monthly stipend ($90–$150 USD/month at public universities)
Acceptance rate: Varies by country quota; generally 30–60 applicants per country-level slot
Real example: Nigeria’s Federal Scholarship Board has historically facilitated bilateral scholarships with Kazakhstan under government-to-government agreements. Check with your country’s education ministry for the 2026 quota.
Your advantage: These slots are distributed by country, meaning you’re not competing globally—you’re competing within your national pool, which is dramatically smaller.
2. University Merit Scholarships (Nazarbayev University Model)
Who funds it: Individual universities from their own endowments and government allocations.
What makes you competitive: Academic excellence, research potential, letters of recommendation from credible academics, and a clear study plan.
Typical award: 50%–100% tuition waiver + graduate stipend of $400–$600/month (at NU level)
Acceptance rate: More competitive—NU’s overall acceptance rate is approximately 15%–20% for international applicants
Real example: The Nazarbayev University Graduate School of Business offers merit-based MBA scholarships to international students with strong professional and academic backgrounds.
Your advantage: NU’s English-medium environment and Western-style curriculum mean your existing academic preparation in Anglophone Africa is directly transferable.
3. NGO and Foundation-Funded Placements at Kazakhstani Institutions
Who funds it: International organizations like the Open Society Foundations, Aga Khan Foundation, and various Islamic development funding bodies that support Central Asian study.
What makes you competitive: Demonstrated commitment to community impact, development goals, and social change narratives.
Typical award: Variable—some cover full costs, others supplement government scholarships
Acceptance rate: Low competition because few applicants connect these organizations to Kazakhstan specifically
Real example: The Aga Khan Foundation supports students pursuing programs in Central Asia, particularly in education, health, and rural development fields.
Your advantage: Your development context as an African applicant is genuinely compelling to these funders. Use it.
4. Research and Doctoral Fellowships
Who funds it: Kazakhstan’s National Academy of Sciences, individual university research centers, and joint programs with European and American partner institutions.
What makes you competitive: A specific, well-articulated research proposal, a potential supervisor who’s already agreed to work with you, and demonstrated prior research experience.
Typical award: Full tuition waiver + research stipend of $500–$800/month + conference travel budget
Acceptance rate: Highly dependent on supervisor availability and research alignment; less competitive than master’s programs in raw numbers
Real example: Nazarbayev University’s research centers in energy, materials science, and life sciences actively recruit international doctoral students.
Your advantage: If you identify a specific faculty member whose research aligns with yours and reach out before applying, your acceptance probability increases substantially.
5. Partner Institution Exchange Scholarships
Who funds it: Joint programs between Kazakhstani universities and institutions in your home country.
What makes you competitive: Being enrolled at a partner institution; academic standing; language skills.
Typical award: Tuition waiver at the host institution + some accommodation support; you may retain your home-country scholarship simultaneously
Acceptance rate: Often very favorable because slots go unfilled
Real example: Several African universities have signed MOU agreements with Kazakhstani institutions—check with your current or former institution’s international office.
Your advantage: You may already have a connection you’re not using.
Crafting Your Kazakhstan Scholarship Application: Step-by-Step
The difference between a winning and a losing application is almost never raw academic credentials. It’s preparation, specificity, and timing.
Here’s exactly how to move from “I’m interested” to “I’ve submitted”:
Step 1: Create your application account (Weeks 1–2)
Register on the official scholarship portal or university admissions platform. Use a professional email address—not a nickname. Download the full application guide in PDF and read it completely before touching any form.
Step 2: Gather your documents (Weeks 2–5)
You’ll need:
- Official academic transcripts (sealed, with certified English or Russian translation)
- Degree certificates (original + notarized copies)
- Passport (valid for at least 18 months beyond your intended start date)
- IELTS/TOEFL score report (or equivalent)
- Medical fitness certificate from a licensed physician
- Police clearance certificate (some programs require this)
- Two to three letters of recommendation (academic and/or professional)
- A personal statement or motivation letter (more on this below)
- Proof of financial need (if required by the program)
Step 3: Draft your personal statement (Weeks 3–6)
Your personal statement is your most powerful document. It’s where your story—your real, specific, human story—either wins the committee or loses them. Write a first draft, let it sit for 48 hours, revise with fresh eyes, and have someone who knows you well read it before submission. Address specifically why Kazakhstan, why this field, and why now.
Step 4: Secure your references (Weeks 2–5, parallel track)
Don’t wait until everything else is ready to ask your references. Ask early, give them a clear deadline (at least two weeks before the application deadline), provide them with your CV, personal statement draft, and a summary of the scholarship. A reference who understands what you’re applying for writes a far stronger letter.
Step 5: Complete the online application form (Week 6–7)
Fill in every field. Leave nothing blank that’s intended to be filled. Inconsistencies between your form and your documents are an immediate red flag for reviewers. Double-check that dates, names, and institution names match exactly across all documents.
Step 6: Review everything (Week 7–8)
Read your entire application as if you’re the scholarship committee. Check for spelling errors, factual inconsistencies, and missing attachments. Ask a trusted friend or mentor to review the full package.
Step 7: Submit before the deadline (Week 8–10)
Submit at least 5–7 days before the official deadline. Systems crash, uploads fail, and verification emails disappear. Give yourself buffer. After submission, save your confirmation email and reference number in a dedicated folder.
Timeline reality check: Give yourself 10–12 weeks minimum for a strong Kazakhstan scholarship application. Document translation and notarization alone can take 2–4 weeks in many African countries.
⚠️ 5 Mistakes That Cost Applicants Their Kazakhstan Scholarship (Avoid These)
- Submitting generic motivation letters that could apply to any scholarship in any country—committees read hundreds; yours must be specific to Kazakhstan
- Ignoring language requirements and applying for an English-medium program without valid test scores (or a legitimate waiver)
- Requesting references at the last minute and ending up with rushed, underwhelming letters
- Not getting transcripts translated and notarized until the week of the deadline—translation takes time; don’t let paperwork kill an otherwise strong application
- Failing to explain gaps in your academic or professional timeline—silence reads as something to hide; clarity reads as honesty
Positioning Your Story: Why You’re the Right Candidate
Here’s the truth that most scholarship guides won’t say directly.
Kazakhstan scholarship committees aren’t just looking for the applicant with the highest GPA. They’re looking for the applicant whose goals most clearly align with what the scholarship is designed to achieve.
For government scholarships, that often means students who will contribute to knowledge exchange between Kazakhstan and their home country. For university merit scholarships, it means students who will thrive academically and represent the institution well globally.
Your story—your African context, your professional experience, your community ties, your specific reason for choosing Kazakhstan—is not a liability. It’s your differentiator.
The career-change or returning-student story is particularly powerful when framed correctly. The key is not to apologize for the path you’ve taken. It’s to explain, with clarity and conviction, why that path has led you exactly here.
Here are three frameworks you can use to structure your personal statement:
Framework 1: “The Turning Point”
Open with a specific moment—a project, a failure, a conversation, an insight—that crystallized why you needed this degree and why Kazakhstan is the right place to pursue it. Move from that moment to your goals, and close with what you’ll contribute.
Framework 2: “From Stability to Ambition”
Acknowledge what you’ve built so far professionally. Then explain, clearly and without apology, why stability is no longer enough—what you want to build next, and why this program is the bridge.
Framework 3: “The Gap That Led Here”
If you’ve had time away from academia, own it. Describe what you were doing, what you learned that formal education couldn’t have taught you, and how it makes you a more serious and purposeful student today.
“I spent three paragraphs of my first draft explaining why I hadn’t studied sooner. My mentor told me to cut all of it. When I replaced apology with clarity about where I was going, the whole letter changed. I got the scholarship six weeks later.”
— Adaeze O., Nazarbayev University MBA Scholar, 2024, age 31
The difference between a weak personal statement and a strong one is almost always specificity.
Weak: “I want to study in Kazakhstan to gain international exposure and improve my career prospects.”
Strong: “Kazakhstan’s position as Central Asia’s largest economy, and Nazarbayev University’s research program in sustainable energy systems, aligns directly with my work managing renewable energy projects in Kano State over the past four years. I want to bring both the technical depth from this program and the implementation experience from Nigeria back into a regional energy policy role.”
The second one wins. Every time. Authenticity, specificity, and forward vision are your differentiators.
The 2026 Kazakhstan Scholarship Timeline
| Date Range | Milestone |
|---|---|
| October–November 2025 | Research and shortlist programs; begin document gathering |
| November–December 2025 | Request transcripts, begin translation and notarization |
| December 2025–January 2026 | Contact references; draft personal statement |
| January–February 2026 | Most Kazakhstan government scholarship portals open for 2026 cycle |
| February–March 2026 | Nazarbayev University and KIMEP application windows open |
| March–April 2026 | Peak submission period; most fixed deadlines fall here |
| April–May 2026 | Shortlisting and interview notifications |
| May–June 2026 | Scholarship award letters issued |
| June–July 2026 | Visa applications and pre-departure preparation |
| August–September 2026 | Semester start at most Kazakhstani universities |
Rolling applications note: Some university-level scholarships at KIMEP and smaller public institutions accept rolling applications—meaning there’s no single deadline, and decisions are made on a first-qualified, first-considered basis. If you’re working around a busy schedule, these are your most flexible entry points.
Set a phone reminder right now for six weeks before the earliest deadline you’re targeting. Adult applicants and working professionals consistently underestimate the time required to gather official documents, especially international certifications and translated transcripts.
Proactive planning is the single biggest separator between applicants who submit strong applications and those who scramble at the last minute.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I apply for a Kazakhstan scholarship if I’ve been out of school for several years?
Yes, you can. Most Kazakhstan government scholarships and university programs don’t disqualify applicants for time gaps between education and application. What matters is your most recent degree, your current academic potential, and your stated purpose. Many programs—especially at the graduate level—actively value professional experience gained after your last degree.
Do Kazakhstan scholarships cover living expenses, or just tuition?
It depends on the program. The Kazakhstan Government Scholarship for International Students covers tuition and dormitory accommodation, plus a monthly stipend. Nazarbayev University’s fellowships add a more substantial monthly living allowance. Always verify what’s included by reading the official program documentation, not third-party summaries.
Do I need to speak Russian or Kazakh to study in Kazakhstan?
Not necessarily. Nazarbayev University and KIMEP University operate entirely in English, and both offer fully funded opportunities to international students. Several programs at public universities are also available in English. However, learning basic Russian or Kazakh will meaningfully improve your daily life and integration in Kazakhstan.
Can I work while on a Kazakhstan scholarship?
This varies by program and visa type. Student visa holders in Kazakhstan are generally restricted from formal employment, but many programs permit on-campus work such as research assistantships or teaching assistantships, which are often included as part of your scholarship package. Confirm the specific rules for your program before assuming anything.
How long does it take from application to getting a final scholarship decision?
Typically three to five months from the application deadline to the final award letter, depending on the program. Government bilateral scholarships may take longer because they involve coordination between two national education ministries. University-level scholarships often move faster. Plan for a five-month window and use the waiting period to prepare your visa documents.
Can I reapply if I’m rejected from a Kazakhstan scholarship?
Yes, and you should. Most Kazakhstan scholarship programs explicitly permit reapplication in subsequent cycles. Use the feedback period wisely—strengthen your academic profile, refine your personal statement, and address whatever was weakest in your previous application. Many successful scholarship recipients applied more than once.
Are African applicants at a disadvantage compared to applicants from CIS countries?
Strategically, no. Within the international student quota, African applicants often face less competition than applicants from neighboring CIS countries, simply because fewer African students apply. Your distinctiveness as a candidate from a different continent, with a specific development context and professional perspective, can be a genuine asset when committees are building a diverse cohort.
Your questions are the right ones to be asking—and asking them means you’re already thinking like a serious applicant.
Your Action Plan: Next Steps
You’ve just read everything you need to take Kazakhstan seriously as a study destination.
Here’s the truth: every year, scholarship slots at Kazakhstani universities sit unfilled because qualified international students didn’t know to apply. You now know. That shifts the responsibility—and the opportunity—entirely to you.
It’s completely normal to feel a mix of excitement and uncertainty right now. Kazakhstan is unfamiliar. The process feels long. You’re not sure you’re competitive enough. That feeling is not a sign that you’re wrong for this. It’s a sign that you’re taking it seriously—and serious applicants are exactly who these scholarships are designed for.
Here are your three immediate next steps:
- Today: Visit the official Nazarbayev University international admissions page and the Kazakhstan Ministry of Education’s scholarship portal. Download the 2026 application guides for the programs most relevant to your field. Read them completely. Bookmark both pages.
- This week: Pull together your academic transcripts, check their translation status, and identify two people who could write strong reference letters for you. Send them a preliminary message letting them know you’re planning to apply. Early communication produces better letters.
- This month: Draft a one-page version of your personal statement using one of the three frameworks from Section 9. Don’t wait until the application opens to start writing—your story needs time to develop. A rough draft now becomes a powerful statement by January.
