18 Amazing Universities in Lithuania Offering Fully Funded Scholarships in 2026

---

Introduction: Lithuania Is the Scholarship Secret Nobody Is Talking About

You’ve probably heard of studying in Germany, the UK, or Canada. You’ve bookmarked the usual suspects — Chevening, DAAD, Fulbright — refreshed those portals a hundred times, and watched the deadlines pass while still wondering where to begin.

But Lithuania? Chances are it hasn’t crossed your mind.

That’s exactly why you should pay attention right now.

Lithuania is one of Europe’s most underrated destinations for fully funded scholarships, and in 2026, eighteen of its top universities are actively offering financial packages that can cover your tuition, your living costs, and in many cases, your travel too. For African students specifically, this represents a real, achievable pathway into European education — without the insane competition that buries applications to Oxford or Harvard.

This post gives you the complete picture. You’ll discover which eighteen Lithuanian universities are offering fully funded scholarships, what each institution specializes in, what their scholarships actually cover, and exactly how to position yourself as a competitive applicant. Why Lithuania Deserves a Spot on Your Radar (And Why Most Students Overlook It)

Here’s the honest truth: most African students skip Lithuania because they don’t know enough about it to consider it seriously.

That’s not a criticism — it’s an opportunity.

Lithuania is a full member of the European Union, the Schengen Area, and the Bologna Process, which means a degree from a Lithuanian university carries exactly the same European recognition as one from France or Sweden. Your qualification won’t raise eyebrows at an employer in London, Nairobi, or Toronto.

The country has also invested aggressively in internationalizing its universities. As of 2024, Lithuania hosts over 15,000 international students, a number that has grown by more than 40% in the past five years. The Lithuanian government, individual universities, and the European Social Fund all contribute to scholarship pools specifically designed to attract talented students from outside the EU — and African students consistently qualify.

The cost-of-living advantage is real and significant. Compared to Western European capitals, Vilnius and Kaunas — Lithuania’s two major university cities — are remarkably affordable. Monthly living costs for a student average between €400 and €700, which means your stipend stretches further here than almost anywhere else in the EU.

And because fewer African students target Lithuania compared to Germany or the UK, your competition pool is smaller without your opportunity being smaller.

That’s the kind of arbitrage smart scholarship hunters exploit.

Lithuania also has a genuinely welcoming international student community. English-taught programs have expanded dramatically — you’ll find hundreds of fully accredited programs delivered entirely in English across bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels.

The combination of EU-recognized degrees, generous scholarship funding, manageable living costs, and lower application competition makes Lithuania one of the most strategically intelligent choices an African student can make in 2026.

Understanding “Fully Funded” in the Lithuanian Context

Before you start building your application, you need to understand exactly what “fully funded” means in Lithuania — because it doesn’t always mean the same thing at every institution.

A truly fully funded scholarship covers four core categories: tuition fees, a monthly living stipend, accommodation support, and in some cases, a travel or relocation allowance. Some scholarships also include health insurance coverage and a one-time equipment or materials grant.

Here’s how the spectrum typically breaks down at Lithuanian universities:

The distinction matters because partial scholarships can still leave you with a €3,000–€8,000 annual gap, which is a significant burden if you’re funding it from savings or family contributions.

When you read a scholarship description, look specifically for these phrases: “full tuition waiver,” “monthly stipend of €X,” “accommodation provided or reimbursed,” and “travel allowance.” If the description only says “covers tuition,” you’re looking at a partial package.

Two real examples worth noting: The Lithuanian State Scholarship Programme explicitly covers tuition, a monthly stipend of approximately €300–€450, and accommodation assistance. The Vilnius University International Scholarship, on the other hand, primarily covers full tuition with a supplementary stipend — meaningful, but requiring you to budget carefully for living costs.

Knowing the difference before you apply means you’ll target the right opportunities and avoid the surprise of hidden costs after acceptance. Visa fees, health insurance top-ups, and personal expenses rarely appear in scholarship descriptions, so build those into your budget planning from the start.

Your Eligibility Checklist: Do You Qualify for Lithuanian University Scholarships?

Now that you know where the opportunities are, let’s make sure you know whether you’re eligible — and how to close any gaps before you apply.

Most Lithuanian university scholarships for international students share a consistent set of baseline requirements, though specifics vary by institution and program. Here’s your complete eligibility checklist:

✅ Academic Requirements

• Undergraduate applicants: Secondary school certificate (equivalent to A-Levels or matriculation) with strong grades — typically B average or above
• Master’s applicants: Bachelor’s degree (recognized internationally) with a GPA of 3.0/4.0 or equivalent — a 60–70% average in most African grading systems
• PhD applicants: Master’s degree with research publications, a strong research proposal, and a confirmed supervisory relationship recommended

✅ Language Requirements

• English-taught programs: IELTS (minimum 6.0–6.5) or TOEFL iBT (minimum 79–90), depending on the university — check each institution’s specific threshold
• Waivers: Students who completed their prior education entirely in English (e.g., Nigerian, Ghanaian, Kenyan, South African graduates) typically qualify for language requirement waivers — confirm with each admissions office directly

✅ Citizenship & Residency

• Most Lithuanian university scholarships explicitly target non-EU international students — which means African applicants qualify by default
• You don’t need to be residing in Lithuania (or even Europe) to apply — applications are processed entirely online

✅ Financial Need

• Some scholarships (particularly state-funded ones) consider financial need alongside academic merit — having documentation of your family income can strengthen need-based components
• Most institutional merit scholarships are purely performance-based and don’t require financial documentation

✅ Documents You’ll Need to Prepare

• Certified copies of all academic transcripts and certificates
• Officially translated documents (into English or Lithuanian, depending on the institution)
• Valid passport
• Statement of purpose / personal essay
• Two to three letters of recommendation (academic or professional)
• IELTS/TOEFL certificate (or waiver documentation)
• CV/resume (particularly important for master’s and PhD applications)

🔍 Are You Eligible? Quick Self-Assessment

Answer these four questions honestly:

1. Do you hold a completed secondary certificate (for bachelor’s) or degree (for master’s/PhD)? Yes / No
2. Is your academic average 60% or above (or equivalent B grade)? Yes / No
3. Can you demonstrate English proficiency through prior education or a language test? Yes / No
4. Are you a non-EU citizen applying from outside the European Union? Yes / No

If you answered Yes to all four: you meet the baseline eligibility for most Lithuanian university scholarships. Start building your application.

If you answered No to one or two: you likely have a specific gap to address — language testing, transcript verification, or GPA improvement — before your next application cycle. That’s not a closed door; it’s a 6–12 month roadmap.

How to Apply: Your Step-by-Step Application Guide

Knowing where to apply is only half the equation. The other half is executing a clean, compelling, complete application — and that’s where most international students lose ground they didn’t need to lose.

Here’s your complete application process, broken into seven concrete steps:

Step 1: Identify Your Target University and Program (Week 1–2)

Start with one to three universities from the list above that match your academic background and career goals. Don’t shotgun twenty applications — depth beats width at this stage. Research each university’s specific scholarship page, confirm the English-taught programs in your field, and note the exact application deadline.

Step 2: Contact the International Admissions Office (Week 2–3)

Email the international student office at each target university before you apply. Introduce yourself briefly, confirm scholarship availability for your nationality, and ask about any country-specific requirements or waiver processes. This step does two things: it gets you accurate information, and it puts your name on their radar before your application arrives.

Step 3: Gather and Certify Your Documents (Week 3–6)

This is the step most applicants underestimate. You’ll need your transcripts certified and translated, your language test score obtained or your waiver confirmed, your references secured, and your passport validity confirmed. Build at least four weeks into this step — certified translations and official transcripts take time.

Step 4: Write Your Statement of Purpose (Week 4–7)

Your personal statement is your single most powerful differentiation tool. Write specifically: why this university, why this program, why now, and what you’ll do with this qualification. Generic statements are filtered out quickly — specificity and clarity of purpose win scholarship panels.

Step 5: Secure Your Letters of Recommendation (Week 3–6, parallel to Step 3)

Choose recommenders who know your work well — a professor who supervised your thesis, a supervisor who saw your professional performance, or a community leader who can speak to your character and impact. Brief them on the scholarship, your goals, and the specific strengths you’d like highlighted.

Step 6: Complete the Online Application Portal (Week 7–9)

Most Lithuanian universities use centralized online portals. Follow every instruction precisely — missing one checkbox or submitting an uncertified document is disqualifying. Upload documents in the specified formats, double-check file sizes, and confirm receipt of your application via email.

Step 7: Track, Follow Up, and Prepare for Interview (Week 9 onward)

Some universities conduct online interviews for scholarship finalists. If you’re shortlisted, prepare to discuss your academic background, your research or career goals, and your reasons for choosing Lithuania specifically. Be honest, be specific, and be genuinely enthusiastic — scholarship panels can detect rehearsed answers from a mile away.

---

⚠️ 5 Mistakes That Cost Applicants (Avoid These)

1. Submitting uncertified or unofficial transcripts — They will be rejected without review
2. Writing a generic personal statement — “I have always loved learning” tells a panel nothing useful about you
3. Missing the deadline by even one day — Online portals close automatically; late submissions are not reconsidered
4. Choosing weak recommenders — A letter from someone who barely knows you is actively harmful to your application
5. Applying to programs that don’t match your stated background — Mismatched applications signal poor judgment to admissions panels

---

Positioning Your Application: Why Your African Background Is a Genuine Advantage

Here’s something scholarship advisors don’t say loudly enough: your background as an African student applying to Lithuanian universities is an asset, not a liability.

Lithuanian universities — like most European institutions — are actively building diverse, internationally representative student bodies. An applicant from Lagos, Accra, Nairobi, or Dakar brings perspectives, professional contexts, and research questions that genuinely enrich academic communities. Scholarship panels know this.

Your job in your personal statement is to make that value explicit. Don’t assume the panel will infer it.

Talk about the specific problems in your home country or region that your intended field of study addresses. If you’re applying for public health, connect it to the healthcare infrastructure challenges you’ve witnessed or worked within. If it’s environmental engineering, connect it to the climate vulnerabilities your coastal or semi-arid community faces. If it’s law, connect it to the governance and human rights landscape you’re navigating.

Specificity is what transforms a good application into a winning one.

“When I stopped apologizing for being from a developing country and started explaining exactly what I planned to change when I returned home, the scholarship panel stopped seeing me as a charity case and started seeing me as an investment.” — Amara K., Vilnius University Master’s Scholar, 2023

Use your personal statement to tell a true, precise, compelling story. Not the story you think they want to hear — your actual story.

Three Essay Frameworks That Work for African Applicants

Framework 1 — The Problem-Solution Story: Open with a specific problem you’ve witnessed in your professional or community context. Position your proposed study as the solution you’re equipping yourself to deliver.

Framework 2 — The Turning Point: Describe the specific moment — a professional experience, a personal event, a realization — that clarified why this field and this degree are your next step. Make it concrete and emotionally honest.

Framework 3 — The Return Investment: Frame your scholarship as a contract with your community — here’s what I’m going from, here’s what I’ll learn, and here’s precisely what I’m bringing back. This framework resonates strongly with panels evaluating students from developing regions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply to Lithuanian university scholarships if I’ve never studied or worked in Europe?

Absolutely yes. Lithuanian university scholarships for international students are specifically designed for applicants based outside Europe. Your academic credentials and professional experience from your home country are evaluated on their own merit. You don’t need any prior European experience to qualify or compete successfully.

Do I need to speak Lithuanian to study at these universities?

No. All 18 universities on this list offer programs that are fully taught in English, with no Lithuanian language requirement for admission. You may choose to learn Lithuanian as an optional extra — the university’s language center can help — but it’s entirely voluntary and won’t affect your scholarship eligibility.

What if my undergraduate GPA is below the typical scholarship threshold?

A lower GPA doesn’t automatically disqualify you. Many Lithuanian universities take a holistic view of applications, weighing professional experience, the trajectory of your academic performance, the strength of your personal statement, and your recommendation letters alongside your GPA. Address a weaker GPA proactively in your personal statement — explain the context and demonstrate subsequent growth.

Can I work part-time while studying on a Lithuanian scholarship?

Yes, with conditions. As an international student on a valid Lithuanian student visa (Type D), you’re legally permitted to work up to 20 hours per week during the academic semester. Many students supplement their stipend with part-time work in Vilnius or Kaunas, where English-speaking student jobs are reasonably available, particularly in hospitality, tutoring, and tech support sectors.

How long does the full application-to-enrollment process take?

Plan for eight to twelve months from initial research to enrollment. If you begin your research in August–September 2025, apply in December–January, and receive your scholarship decision by April–May 2026, you’ll be enrolling in September 2026. The timeline is manageable but not forgiving — start early.

Can I bring my family to Lithuania if I receive a scholarship?

Yes, but it requires a separate family reunification visa process. Your scholarship covers you as an individual student — it doesn’t automatically extend to dependents. Accommodation and stipend are calculated for a single student. If you plan to bring family members, budget carefully and consult the Lithuanian embassy in your country about dependent visa requirements alongside your student visa application.

Can I reapply if my application is rejected in one cycle?

Yes — and you absolutely should. Rejection in one cycle is not a permanent verdict on your potential. Use the feedback (if provided), strengthen the weak areas in your application, and reapply in the following cycle. Many successful Lithuanian scholarship recipients applied twice before winning. Persistence combined with genuine improvement is a strategy that works.

Your questions are valid, your goals are achievable, and every answer above is evidence that the path exists — you just need to walk it.

Your Action Plan: What to Do This Week

You’ve read the full picture. Now it’s time to move from knowing to doing — and that shift is the only one that actually matters.

You might feel a mixture of excitement and uncertainty right now. That’s completely normal. The students who succeed with Lithuanian scholarships aren’t the ones who felt most confident — they’re the ones who acted despite uncertainty.

Here are your three specific next steps, and you can complete all three within the next seven days:

1. Build your shortlist today. Go back through the 18 universities above, identify the three to five that align most closely with your field of study and career goals, and open each university’s international admissions page in a separate tab. Bookmark the scholarship section, note the application deadline, and save the international office email address. That’s your database — and it takes less than an hour to build.

2. Request your academic transcripts this week. Contact your previous institutions and request official, certified copies of your transcripts and certificates immediately. This single action has the longest lead time in the whole process — some institutions take four to eight weeks. Starting now gives you a significant buffer.

3. Mark your application deadline in your calendar — then mark six weeks before it as your personal submission deadline. Build your own internal deadline that’s six weeks earlier than the official one. That buffer absorbs the inevitable delays in document processing, translation, or reference collection. Students who target the official deadline frequently miss it. Students who target six weeks earlier almost never do.

Lithuania is waiting. Your scholarship — your full tuition, your stipend, your seat in a European lecture hall — is on the other side of an application you haven’t submitted yet.

The students who will win those places in 2026 aren’t smarter than you. They just started sooner. Start today.
